The Redundancy Payments Acts 1976-2007 set out minimum statutory redundancy payments for workers aged 16 or over who have been made redundant and have 104 weeks’ continuous service with their employer. The statutory redun – dancy payment is two week’s gross pay per year of service up to a ceiling of €600 per week plus one week’s pay, which is also subject to the ceiling of €600. This payment is tax-free. Redundancy is where an employee’s position ceases to exist and the employee is not replaced. Employers must give at least two weeks’ notice of redundancy. Many employers offer or negotiate higher redundancy payments, especially in voluntary redundancy situations.
