EPSU 2009 Congress: aiming for Quality Public Services – Quality of Life 2009-2014
he 8th European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) Congress has ended with a clear mandate to promote and protect public services through collective bargaining and social dialogue. The Congress presented a 10 ‘action point’ summarising the decisions taken during the 4-day congress. The delegates represented EPSU membership from all corners of Europe and was held in Brussels. more
Biggest public service union says national negotiations must deliver guarantees on public service jobs, pay and pensions
The leader of Ireland’s largest public service union, IMPACT, has said he will not recommend any agreement that emerges from the current national negotiations unless it contains guaranteed protection of existing public service pay, employment levels and the value of public service pensions. Speaking at the Public Service Executive Union’s (PSEU) annual conference in Killarney today (Thursday) IMPACT general secretary Peter McLoone said this was a ‘bottom line’ for his union. more

Public service redundancies will bring service cuts not reform
IMPACT has said that any significant cuts in public service staffing will result in reduced public services. It was responding to the Government’s announcement (on 26th November 2008) that it is to establish a ‘special group’ to make proposals on the reallocation and rationalisation of public service staff. more

Unions call for genuine public service improvements
The Government should stop targeting internal public service structures and concentrate on reforms that would genuinely improve services to citizens and communities, according to ICTU’s Public Services Committee. In a submission to the task force established to consider implementation of the recent OECD report on Irish public services the unions also said issues affecting pay and working conditions must be dealt with through existing industrial relations processes. The submission also addressed the question of agencies, promotions and recruitment procedures and the Government’s public service cuts. Read the ICTU submission HERE .
MPACT has said that Government plans for a 3% reduction in public service payroll costs by the end of 2009 could damage services, especially to the most vulnerable service users. more
