IMPACT seeks clarity on whistleblowers’ position

IMPACT wants an appropriate Government department to formally ask the Labour Relations Commission to develop a statutory code of practice to cover whistleblowing cases, where employees reveal financial or other malpractice in their workplace. Read more HERE.
Consultations planned on overtime and premium payments

Branches respond to whistleblower appeal

IMPACT seeks answers on OSI chief executive’s pay

IMPACT has written to the chair of Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) to demand an explanation of why the board failed to apply the 2010 public service pay cut to its chief executive. The union has since received assurances that no other senior OSI managers were exempt from the pay cut. Read more HERE.
IMPACT and Coillte move closer on innovative pay agreement

IMPACT and the state forestry company Coillte are making significant progress on a new pay and reward agreement for non-industrial staff. The proposals will introduce new salary scales similar to those for new entrants to the public service, but with performance-related increments and an annual company bonus. Read more HERE.
Government Aer Lingus stake vital to economy

In a letter to transport minister Leo Varadkar, IMPACT national secretary Matt Staunton, has warned that the sale of the Government’s share in Aer Lingus could expose the Irish economy to further damage. Eircom recovery plan approved by ballot

Eircom’s recovery plan has been published and a ballot of members approved the plan by a margin of approximately 60% at the end of March. Talks on the implementation of the plan are set to get underway shortly. Read more HERE.
Teagasc declares surplus staff while teaching staff shortages persist

The agricultural advisory authority, Teagasc, proposes to shed 117 staff as part of its change programme. The agency said that the staff reductions would involve external redeployment arrangements and a voluntary redundancy and early retirement scheme. The agency has sought approval for a voluntary redundancy programme from the Department of Finance. Read more HERE.
ATC strike restrictions unnecessary and unworkable
IMPACT has rejected Fine Gael proposals to limit industrial action rights for Ireland’s air traffic controllers. The proposal to end their right to strike came from TD Simon Coveney as industrial action by air traffic controllers (ATCs) in other parts of Europe was taking place last month. more

Congress warns on privatisation
The general secretary of Ictu, David Begg, has warned that the recent appointment of Colm McCarthy to assess the value of the assets held in semi-state companies appears to be a prelude to an ‘extensive’ privatisation programme. It is a view supported by many commentators in recent weeks as McCarthy’s review gets underway, which has led to increasing concern about the effects of privatisation across the semi-state sector. more

Aer Lingus cabin crew ballot for industrial action
Cabin crew staff at Aer Lingus are holding a ballot for industrial action due to an ongoing dispute concerning revised working hours. The matter has been subject to an unsuccessful arbitration process at the Labour Relations Commission (LRC). Attempts by the union to resolve the issue directly with the company have failed to reach agreement. more

IMPACT criticises Government’s failure to make progress on Industrial Relations Act
IMPACT’s pilots’ branch IALPA proposed an emergency motion at the union’s recent delegate conference, which criticized the Government’s failure to make progress on its commitments to enact legislation which would enable the industrial relations mechanisms, established in the 2004 Act, to operate as originally intended prior to the Supreme Court decision in the Ryanair case. more

Aer Lingus cost savings approved
The cost savings plan produced by Aer Lingus management in November 2009, known as ‘Greenfield’, is now underway following ballots by IMPACT members in cabin crew and the pilots’ branch, IALPA last month. The savings plan, which is valued by the company at €97 million, is designed to reduce the airline’s cost base by 7.5%. more

Workplace deaths fall but safety failures rise
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has recorded a reduction in workplace fatalities and serious injuries in 2008. However, the authority says that the reduction has happened despite continued negligence and failures by both employers and employees to take personal responsibility for their health and safety at work. more
