At least 700 SNA posts lost

At least 700 whole time equivalent special needs assistant (SNA) posts will be lost from 1st September, according to preliminary figures supplied to IMPACT by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE). Over 1,300 schools will see a reduction to their SNA support from the start of the academic year. Read more HERE.
IMPACT disappointed at VEC cuts

IMPACT has expressed disappointment at education minister Ruairi Quinn’s decision to adopt the previous Government’s decision to reduce the number of VECs from 33 to 16. But the union says the revised boundary structure is more coherent than previous plans and says it wants to explore re-branding and reform of the sector to develop and expand services. Early education centres run ‘no empty promises’ election campaign

Twelve early education centres across Dublin ran a unique campaign during the general election urging politicians to ‘listen - but make no empty promises’. Management and staff at the centres, who are IMPACT members, decided to run the campaign following a series of budget cuts which has put the centres under increased pressure over the last 18 months. more

Hunt report on higher education welcome but new fees structure must not discriminate against financially vulnerable

The Hunt Report on higher education was published in January by the Higher Education Authority. IMPACT, which represents management, administrative, library and student services staff in all of the regional institutes of technology, welcomed the challenges presented in the report. However, the union warned that proposed new fee structures must not be allowed to discriminate against the most financially vulnerable from entering third level education, as demand for college places is expected to rise considerably in the coming years. more
VEC sector best equipped to be the lead authority for third level grant schemes

IMPACT’s VEC branch, which represents over 1,400 management and administrative VEC staff, has said that the VEC was the best placed authority to successfully run and manage the third level grants scheme in Ireland. The comment was made at the union branch’s annual general meeting which took place in January. more
Deal protects staff during VEC rationalisation

IMPACT is working closely with its VEC branch to ensure that members benefit from Croke Park protections as the Government’s programme of VEC rationalisation is implemented. The Croke Park deal gives a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies and explicitly says there should be no unilateral revisions of contracts for VEC staff. more
IMPACT opposes education pay cuts

In November, the Department of Education and Skills issued a circular to all schools and VECs instructing them to impose pay cuts on as many as 17,000 low paid staff from January 1st 2011. These include school secretaries, caretakers, cleaners, administrative staff and school completion programme staff. These are workers who are employed directly by individual schools and VECs. They are not on the department's payroll but are indirectly funded through grants from the department. more
IMPACT seeks more information on VEC closures

IMPACT trade union, which represents just over 1,400 VEC staff, has demanded full consultation over the staff and service implications of the closure of 17 of the 33VECs, announced by the Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan in October. The first meeting on the issue between the Department of Education and IMPACT representatives took place earlier this week. more
CDVEC workers reinstated following Labour Court recommendation

19 general operatives staff employed by the City of Dublin VEC (CDVEC) have today received notice to return to work following a Labour Court recommendation that they are properly classifiable as temporary part-time or seasonal employees rather than as temporary fixed-term workers. more
