Dear Colleagues,

Social workers in Turkey are currently engaging in courageous social action. The Turkish Association of Social Workers have opened their offices in Istanbul and Ankara in order to give practical and emotional support to activists who are involved in the recent uprising and trade union strikes in Turkey. They have withstood a recent tear gas attack on their Ankara office (June 3rd). They are also trying to support children, social workers and student social workers who need legal support.

The uprising began as a demonstration to protect Gezi Park and now this has transformed into a mass movement against Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his authoritarian government.

Social workers in IMPACT trade union, the union to which the majority of social workers in Ireland are members, have been keeping track of the developments on the streets of Turkish cities. In the course of the demonstrations there have been violations of human rights and suffering of people who are exercising their right to decide about their own living space and their right to a greater degree of democracy. Inappropriate use of force has led to massive intimidation and harming of people. Throughout these events, Turkish social workers have worked ethically and with their professional values in minds as they promote human rights and social justice, and provide citizens with various forms of psycho-social assistance.

In the spirit of trade union and social work values, we in the National Social Work Vocational Group want to take this moment to send messages of support and solidarity to our colleagues in Turkey. We would like to express our full support to our colleagues in their struggle. As a profession that works to principles of human rights, liberation, empowerment and social justice, we stand shoulder to shoulder with the social workers in Turkey as they bring these messages to life.

We urge all social workers who are members of IMPACT to also send your messages of solidarity and support to social workers in Turkey.
Please send messages of solidarity to TASW at
