Staff and activists from Ireland’s leading public service union joined pickets outside Tesco’s store in Dublin’s Baggot Street today (Wednesday) to show support for striking Mandate members. IMPACT is also supporting Mandate’s call for consumers to ‘shop with a conscience’ in response to Tesco management’s attempts to slash the pay and conditions of its most experienced staff.
IMPACT lead organiser Joe O’Connor said the union was urging its members to show support to Mandate workers at the eight Tesco stores where strikes are underway, and any others that may join them over the coming period.
“Public service workers are showing support for Tesco staff who are taking a brave and necessary stand against an employer determined to treat its workforce with disregard. It’s important that all Tesco staff hold the line to prevent others in the retail sector being targeted. IMPACT stands for decent work and fair pay for all workers, regardless of what sector they work in. Today we are showing our support and respect to our colleagues in the private sector.”
