In this week’s blog David Begg, general secretary of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, discusses the options facing the Government in the next budget. Despite the scale of the difficulties, he explains that we do have choices. Three components are missing from the picture right now. They are growth, hope and jobs.
Since the crisis hit in 2008 the Irish public has been repeatedly misled. Time after time we have been told that there are no alternatives and that we have no choices. That is untrue. We do have choices and there are viable alternatives to the relentless austerity agenda. But as austerity has been such an abysmal failure – record unemployment, collapsed demand, high emigration – there is a compelling case for Government to actively explore some of these alternatives in advance of December’s Budget. We urgently need to restore Growth, Hope & Jobs and Congress has a few ideas about how this can be done. I would be grateful if you could take a minute to watch the short film clip above. And if you like what you hear, it would be great if you could share it and pass it on to friends.
